Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Ms Shaza Fatima Khawaja, in collaboration with Ignite National Technology Fund, officially unveiled Pakistan’s Digital Sector Roadmap at a high-profile event yesterday, marking a key step in advancing the country’s digital transformation agenda. The initiative, supported by Asian Development Bank, sets a structured framework for technology-driven growth and identifies priority areas for innovation, including EdTech, HealthTech, AgriTech, FinTech, ClimateTech, and GovTech. The roadmap aims to guide Pakistan’s digital strategy over the next decade, fostering inclusive economic growth and building a knowledge-based economy.

During the event, Minister Khawaja highlighted several ongoing and upcoming initiatives designed to accelerate Pakistan’s AI and technology ecosystem. This includes the establishment of GO AI Hub in partnership with GO Telecom, providing a dedicated platform for applied AI research and entrepreneurship. The Ministry also announced the launch of a Chromebook assembly line in collaboration with Google, aiming to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities and provide affordable devices for students and professionals. In addition, the government introduced CEGA, the Center of Excellence in Gaming and Animation, which will support talent development, creative industries, and innovation in the rapidly expanding digital entertainment sector.

The Minister congratulated winners of the National AI Wrapper Competition, emphasizing the importance of nurturing AI talent and translating the National AI Policy 2025 into practical outcomes. Over 1,700 teams from across Pakistan, including substantial female participation, competed in areas such as EdTech, HealthTech, AgriTech, FinTech, ClimateTech, and GovTech. Their solutions, focused on addressing real-world challenges, are now being incorporated into broader national initiatives under the guidance of MoITT and Ignite. The competition reflects Pakistan’s growing capabilities in applied AI and the government’s commitment to fostering an innovation-led economy.

Experts attending the event stressed that Pakistan’s Digital Sector Roadmap will serve as a foundation for a connected, resilient, and future-ready nation. By integrating AI applications across multiple sectors, the initiative is expected to enhance governance, improve public services, and create sustainable opportunities for startups and researchers. Federal Minister Khawaja encouraged stakeholders from academia, private sector, and civil society to actively participate in these initiatives, emphasizing collaboration as key to realizing the full potential of Pakistan’s digital economy. Ignite CEO Rafique A. Buriro noted that programs like GO AI Hub, the Chromebook assembly, and CEGA provide tangible avenues for innovation, helping to develop technical skills, encourage entrepreneurship, and promote inclusive growth nationwide.

With these developments, Pakistan is positioning itself as a regional leader in technology and digital innovation, ensuring that public and private sectors work together to harness AI and digital solutions for economic development, education, healthcare, and governance. The roadmap provides a clear vision for the next decade, combining strategic investments in infrastructure, technology, and human capital to build an inclusive digital ecosystem. MoITT and Ignite continue to drive this agenda, demonstrating that focused policy, capacity-building, and public-private collaboration can accelerate Pakistan’s journey toward becoming a digitally empowered nation.
