The Federal Government has ordered heightened surveillance of social media platforms in the lead-up to and throughout the holy month of Muharram, citing a surge in hate speech and sectarian incitement as a growing threat to national security.
In a directive issued to provincial authorities, the Interior Ministry expressed alarm over the increasing polarization fueled by online content, warning of a potential upsurge in militancy. To counter this, all sectarian organizations, their affiliates, and provocative online personalities linked to extremism will be closely monitored.
As part of the comprehensive security measures, the government has authorized the deployment of the military at the request of provincial administrations to assist law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and order during Muharram.
Additionally, Islamabad district authorities have banned 27 religious scholars from delivering sermons to prevent inflammatory rhetoric.
These steps come as the country braces for heightened religious activities and gatherings during the sensitive month.
