Pakistan and China have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation and fostering innovation in the digital space. A high-level delegation from China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC), one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies, paid an official visit to the Ministry of IT & Telecom in Islamabad, underscoring the strategic importance of Pakistan in China’s broader technology and infrastructure ambitions.

The visiting delegation was received by Federal Minister for IT & Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, who welcomed CMCC’s renewed focus on investing in Pakistan’s digital ecosystem. The meeting marked a continuation of the robust cooperation between the two nations under the Digital Pakistan framework and reflects growing synergy in areas such as next-generation telecom infrastructure, digital inclusion, and cross-border technology partnerships. During the discussions, both sides engaged in comprehensive talks aimed at expanding telecom infrastructure and ensuring wider internet and mobile connectivity across underserved and remote regions of Pakistan. CMCC’s leadership reiterated their long-standing commitment to playing a transformative role in Pakistan’s digital journey, especially through their local subsidiary, Zong 4G, which has been a critical player in expanding Pakistan’s high-speed mobile internet coverage in recent years.

Federal Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja highlighted the government’s ambition to make Pakistan a digitally inclusive economy, driven by innovation, modern infrastructure, and strong international partnerships. She acknowledged the pivotal role CMCC has played in supporting Digital Pakistan’s goals, particularly in bridging the urban-rural digital divide and enabling affordable access to high-speed internet services. The meeting also touched on the importance of advancing 5G readiness in Pakistan, exploring the potential for cloud infrastructure deployment, and collaborating on smart city solutions. Both parties expressed interest in developing a joint roadmap that aligns technological innovation with national priorities in education, healthcare, e-governance, and economic growth.

CMCC’s representatives expressed confidence in Pakistan’s potential as a digital growth hub and stressed their intention to deepen ties by bringing more advanced technologies, expertise, and scalable infrastructure projects to the country. With a global footprint and experience in deploying cutting-edge telecom solutions across Asia, Africa, and Europe, CMCC is well-positioned to support Pakistan’s ambitions to become a regional leader in digital innovation. The visit is also being viewed as a reaffirmation of the strong strategic relationship between China and Pakistan, which has expanded beyond traditional infrastructure projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to include digital and technological collaboration. Experts believe that this digital dimension of the partnership will have far-reaching implications for Pakistan’s economic resilience, technological independence, and global competitiveness.

The government of Pakistan, through the Ministry of IT & Telecom, is actively pursuing foreign investment and strategic partnerships that can support local capacity-building, knowledge transfer, and innovation in digital services. As global economies pivot toward digital-first models, such partnerships are seen as essential to not only modernising Pakistan’s telecommunications sector but also unlocking new avenues for growth, employment, and social inclusion. The CMCC delegation’s visit and the resulting discussions mark a milestone in Pakistan’s digital diplomacy and underscore the country’s growing relevance in regional tech dynamics. As the Digital Pakistan vision continues to gather momentum, collaborative ventures like these are expected to play a central role in shaping the country’s future as a digitally empowered nation.
