Pakistan has emerged as one of the top ten countries globally with the most affordable internet, with recent figures showing a significant drop in mobile data prices. According to the Economic Survey 2024-25, the cost of 1GB of data in Pakistan declined to Rs 27.0 during the first half of FY 2025, marking a steep 65 percent fall from Rs 77.1 in FY 2018. This substantial reduction is largely attributed to robust regulatory actions and the presence of a highly competitive telecom market.

The aggressive competition among broadband providers and continuous efforts by PTA to create a balanced digital environment have resulted in telecom prices that are now among the lowest in the world. With mobile data priced at just US$0.10 per GB, Pakistan ranks sixth globally and leads in affordability across the region.

Industry stakeholders and PTA officials note that the steady reduction in data rates is not coincidental, but the result of sustained efforts to make digital connectivity more accessible. PTA has emphasized that the declining prices are part of a broader strategy to offer high-quality and affordable services to consumers while ensuring that telecom operators and investors maintain sustainable returns.

This affordability milestone is seen as a significant step toward expanding digital access across the country. With lower data costs, more citizens can connect to online services, educational platforms, e-commerce, and government portals, contributing to enhanced digital inclusion. The availability of cheap internet also supports the broader objectives of Pakistan’s digital transformation by enabling connectivity in remote areas and reducing the digital divide.

Market analysts suggest that if current trends continue, Pakistan could move even higher in global rankings for data affordability. The combination of regulatory vigilance and intense market dynamics has created an environment where consumers benefit directly from reduced costs without a compromise in service quality.

As telecom providers continue investing in infrastructure and innovations, the affordability and reach of internet services are expected to improve further. The drop in mobile data prices is also likely to stimulate growth in various digital sectors including fintech, e-learning, and e-health, where connectivity plays a crucial role.

Pakistan’s success in driving down data prices reflects its commitment to digital progress and positions the country as a model for affordable internet access in emerging markets.
