Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized that transforming Pakistan into a cashless and digitally integrated economy remains one of the government’s foremost priorities. Chairing a review meeting on the shift toward a cashless financial system in Islamabad, he instructed provincial chief secretaries to extend complete cooperation with the federal government in implementing the Raast digital payment system at the district level. He noted that a unified effort across both federal and provincial administrations was critical to ensure progress in building a transparent, secure, and efficient digital financial ecosystem. The Prime Minister also expressed satisfaction over the progress achieved so far in advancing the cashless economy agenda.
The meeting was informed that Pakistan is moving forward with plans to establish a comprehensive digital public infrastructure aimed at creating digital IDs for every citizen. These IDs will be an integrated system that combines national identity cards, biometric verification, and mobile numbers, enabling secure and efficient digital transactions. Officials explained that such a framework would not only strengthen financial inclusion by extending services to previously underserved communities but also streamline payments between citizens, businesses, and government entities. Provincial governments were reported to have made considerable progress in integrating both government-to-public and public-to-government transactions with Raast, which is expected to accelerate adoption and reinforce trust in digital payments across the country.
Discussions also covered infrastructure development necessary to support widespread digitization. Federal development agencies have already granted Right of Way for fiber optic connectivity, ensuring that digital payment systems are supported by reliable, high-speed networks. Negotiations are ongoing with Pakistan Railways and the National Highway Authority to expand digital infrastructure across transport corridors and remote regions. Officials stressed that robust connectivity is vital for extending the benefits of Raast and other digital payment solutions to rural and underserved communities, ensuring no region is left behind in the transition to a digital economy.
The Prime Minister highlighted that digitizing the economy is not just a financial reform but a structural transformation that will redefine service delivery, reduce inefficiencies, and create new opportunities for businesses and individuals alike. He noted that the development of secure digital IDs, the integration of government payment systems with Raast, and the expansion of nationwide fiber connectivity represent key pillars in this effort. These initiatives are expected to reduce reliance on cash transactions, improve transparency, and strengthen Pakistan’s overall economic resilience. By prioritizing innovation, inclusivity, and infrastructure development, the government aims to accelerate the adoption of digital financial systems that empower citizens, improve governance, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
