The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology, chaired by Syed Amin-ul-Haque, was briefed on significant developments ahead of Pakistan’s 5G rollout. Officials informed the committee that 606 MHz of spectrum has been allocated for the upcoming launch. PTA reported that the 5G auction consultant has completed its review and submitted the final report to the Auction Advisory Committee. Once the committee finalizes its recommendations, the matter will be forwarded to the Economic Coordination Committee for policy approval. After the government issues the formal directive, PTA is prepared to initiate 5G services, initially focusing on major cities. Committee members emphasized that auction pricing should be set in Pakistani rupees instead of US dollars to avoid potential financial pressure from currency fluctuations, highlighting the need for stability in the telecom sector.
During the session, the committee also addressed the long-delayed Telecom Tribunal and outstanding Local Distribution Company dues. Officials from the Law Ministry confirmed that summaries for appointing the chairman and members of the tribunal have been forwarded, with appointments expected soon. Syed Amin-ul-Haque noted that he has awaited the tribunal’s establishment since 2019, pointing out that its activation is expected to streamline dispute resolution. PTA added that one LDI company has cleared its pending dues, while negotiations continue with another, and several cases remain in court. Committee members stressed that operationalizing the Telecom Tribunal would provide a more structured framework for recovering outstanding payments efficiently.
Updates on major IT infrastructure projects were also presented. Islamabad IT Park is reportedly in its final phase, with completion expected by December 31, 2025, although the project originally began in 2017. In contrast, the committee expressed concern over delays at Karachi IT Park, urging the ministry to accelerate progress. The chairman emphasized that the contract must be awarded without further delay, particularly with a delegation from Exim Bank Korea scheduled to visit Pakistan on December 2. Officials confirmed that even after awarding the contract, construction will take approximately two years, underscoring the need for timely initiation of work and recommended involving the Korean Embassy to support project advancement.
Committee members concluded by reiterating the importance of swift implementation across both 5G rollout and IT park development. PTA confirmed readiness to commence 5G services following policy approval, while ministry officials assured that efforts are underway to resolve outstanding LDI payments and expedite Karachi IT Park construction. The discussions highlight ongoing government efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure, improve connectivity, and facilitate growth in emerging technology sectors, reflecting a coordinated approach between policy bodies, regulatory authorities, and international partners.
