If you own a Google Pixel smartphone and have been wondering why your storage is filling up faster than expected or why apps seem to close in the background more frequently than they should, a pre-installed system application called AICore may be the reason. This app, which exists exclusively on Pixel devices, permanently reserves up to 7 gigabytes of storage and several gigabytes of random access memory to power on-device artificial intelligence features, regardless of whether you actually use those features on a daily basis. On the Pixel 10, for example, Google allocates approximately 3 gigabytes of RAM exclusively to AICore and the Tensor chip’s dedicated artificial intelligence processor, memory that is simply unavailable to other applications running on the device.
AICore’s primary function is to manage local, on-device artificial intelligence models such as Gemini Nano, keep them updated, and connect them with other applications. It powers features including Magic Compose, Call Notes, Pixel Screenshots, automatic recording summaries in the Recorder application, image recognition in Pixel Studio, and artificial intelligence-powered suggestions in Pixel Journal. Since AICore cannot be completely uninstalled as it is a system application, the practical solution for users who rarely or never use these features is to disable it. Doing so will stop all Gemini Nano-dependent local features from functioning, though the Gemini application itself will continue to work normally as it processes requests through the cloud rather than on-device. All other non-artificial intelligence applications will also continue running without any impact, and as an added benefit, the sometimes intrusive artificial intelligence notifications that AICore generates will stop entirely.
To disable AICore, open the Settings application and tap Apps, then scroll through the list or use the search function to find AICore and tap its entry. Select Disable and confirm the action in the prompt that follows. Critically, after disabling the application, tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and select Uninstall Updates, as this final step is what actually releases the full storage space that AICore has been occupying. If you later decide you want the artificial intelligence features back, simply return to Settings, navigate to Apps, find AICore, and tap Enable. The application will then automatically download its updates and restore all local artificial intelligence functionality to its previous state.
