The Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) and HBL have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding to expand tailored banking and financial solutions for Pakistan’s growing freelancing community. The agreement was signed by Faisal Malik, Head of HBL Konnect, and Dr Imran Batada, President of PAFLA, in the presence of HBL President and CEO Muhammad Nassir Salim, Head of Retail Aalishaan Zaidi, and PAFLA co-founder and Chairman Ibrahim Amin, along with senior officials from both organizations. The renewed collaboration extends a relationship between the two institutions dating back to 2022, when HBL first partnered with PAFLA to offer freelancers a Freelancer Digital Current Account with no minimum balance requirements.
For freelancers earning from global clients, PAFLA framed banking as involving more than simply maintaining an account, pointing instead to the practical challenges of receiving international payments efficiently, managing foreign earnings, accessing appropriate financial products, and building a financial profile that supports long-term growth. This framing reflects recurring themes PAFLA has raised in its broader advocacy work, including its earlier push for skill development and mindset shifts among freelancers navigating AI adoption, now paired with a parallel emphasis on the financial infrastructure freelancers need to actually convert their earnings into sustainable growth. The collaboration brings PAFLA and HBL together with a shared objective of making formal banking more accessible, relevant, and responsive to the specific needs of Pakistan’s freelancers, a segment that has historically faced friction accessing mainstream banking products designed around conventional salaried employment.
The agreement adds HBL to a growing list of banks that have signed similar MoUs with PAFLA over the years, including Allied Bank’s 2022 partnership aimed at supporting the country’s freelancing community in line with the State Bank of Pakistan’s financial inclusion goals, and Meezan Bank’s December 2023 agreement extending specialized Islamic banking services to freelancers. This pattern of PAFLA signing parallel agreements with multiple major banks suggests the association is positioning itself as a central coordination point connecting Pakistan’s freelance workforce with a range of banking options, rather than channeling freelancers toward a single exclusive banking partner. Bringing HBL Konnect specifically into this renewed agreement signals a focus on digital-first banking solutions tailored to freelancers’ remote, internationally-facing work patterns.
For PAFLA, this latest MoU represents another step toward building a financial ecosystem that understands and supports the evolving needs of Pakistan’s digital workforce, aligning with the association’s broader mission of representing and advocating for the country’s estimated three million freelancers. As PAFLA continues expanding its network of banking partnerships alongside its skills development and policy advocacy work, the practical impact of this HBL agreement will likely depend on how effectively the two organizations translate the MoU’s stated objectives into concrete product offerings and services that address the specific international payment and foreign currency management challenges freelancers have long cited as barriers to full participation in Pakistan’s formal banking system.
