Toshihiro Kondo, president of Nihon Falcom, revealed in an interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu that the company plans to release the final installment of the Trails series in 2032, marking its 50th anniversary, with the ending already finalized. The announcement comes as part of Nihon Falcom’s 45th anniversary celebration and provides fans with a concrete timeline for the conclusion of one of the most ambitious long-running narratives in gaming. Known in Japan as Kiseki, the Trails series is part of The Legend of Heroes franchise but has developed into a self-contained saga, spanning more than two decades since its first game, Trails in the Sky, debuted in 2004.
Unlike anthology series such as Square Enix’s Final Fantasy, Trails presents a continuous narrative with interconnected story arcs and persistent characters. Choices and events from early entries have lasting consequences, and minor characters in one game often become central protagonists in later arcs. Villains recur with new context, creating a serialized epic comparable to a long-running novel. The series currently includes four main arcs: Trails in the Sky, a trilogy set in Liberl Kingdom starring Estelle Bright; Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure, a duology set in Crossbell State with Lloyd Bannings; Trails of Cold Steel, a tetralogy set in the Erebonian Empire with Rean Schwarzer; and Trails through Daybreak/Beyond the Horizon, a trilogy in the Calvard Republic featuring Van Arkride and more recent tri-protagonist campaigns including Rean Schwarzer and Kevin Graham from Trails in the Sky 3rd.
The upcoming final installment is expected to culminate in a pan-Zemurian arc, bringing together major cast members and storylines from all previous arcs into a single climactic narrative. This approach promises to deliver a convergence of the series’ complex continuity while providing closure to the overarching plotline that has developed over twenty-two years. Fans of the series can anticipate a narrative that ties together multiple character arcs, political conflicts, and historical threads that have been meticulously built across the series’ interconnected games.
In addition to updates on the Trails franchise, Kondo confirmed that Nihon Falcom is also developing a new entry in the Ys series, a franchise that predates Trails and launched its first title in 1987. The Ys series remains a cornerstone of Falcom’s portfolio and continues to influence Japanese RPG design with fast-paced action gameplay and expansive world-building. These announcements reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to its legacy franchises while maintaining engagement with a dedicated global fan base. By outlining a timeline for the conclusion of Trails and continuing the Ys series, Nihon Falcom aims to provide clarity for fans and investors while reinforcing its position as a leading developer in the JRPG genre.
