Motorola has released the Moto Watch 2026, a smartwatch priced at 150 dollars that impresses at first glance with the weight and finish typically associated with devices costing considerably more, but that ultimately falls short once its underlying software limitations become apparent during extended use. The device carries the heft and visual polish of a premium timepiece, standing apart from many competitors in its price range that function primarily as fitness trackers rather than full featured watches, yet a closer examination reveals that its outward appearance does not carry through to the overall user experience.
Questions have emerged regarding who actually manufactures the Moto Watch, an issue that helps explain some of the inconsistencies found during testing. Motorola markets and sells the device through its own retail channels, with Designed by Motorola engraved on the underside and Motorola Mobility listed as both manufacturer and importer on the retail packaging. However, the company’s previous watches were produced by CE Brands, also known as Vitalist, a Canadian white label manufacturer that licensed the Moto brand starting in 2023, and CE Brands continues to appear as the official licensee and point of contact on the Moto Watch website. When asked directly about who manufactures the current device, Motorola’s representatives said they did not have that information available and were unable to provide further details, a pattern the company has followed previously with other licensed products bearing its branding.
On the hardware side, the watch features a 47 millimetre aluminium case alongside a stainless steel crown bearing a machined Motorola logo, a 1.43 inch round OLED display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, and an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. During testing, however, the retaining pins on the steel link band slipped out while attempting to swap it for the included silicone sports strap, an issue sometimes seen on lower cost link bands that nonetheless set an early tone for build quality concerns. The device runs on an unspecified system on chip, with Motorola declining to provide details, and operates using Real Time OS rather than Google’s Wear OS, a lower power system typically associated with embedded devices rather than full featured smartwatches. Battery life proved to be a genuine strength, rated at up to thirteen days and reaching eight days in testing even with the always on display enabled, a figure that exceeded the manufacturer’s own claims.
The most significant shortcomings emerged during actual use of the device, stemming largely from its reliance on Real Time OS rather than Wear OS despite an interface designed to closely resemble Google’s platform. Initial setup required multiple restarts before the device could be properly activated, and users are required to manually select which phone notifications should appear on the watch rather than having all notifications relayed by default, unlike most competing devices in its category. The watch supports standard functions including heart rate monitoring, step and calorie tracking, sleep dashboards, a compass and remote camera shutter control, along with the ability to make calls when tethered to a paired phone. However, it lacks support for third party applications, offers no access to Google services or mobile payment functionality, and does not support automatic activity detection, meaning users must manually start tracking before beginning a workout for the watch to record it, a basic feature many wearables have offered for well over a decade.
Despite a partnership with Polar for health and fitness data presentation, which produces a well organised dashboard covering activity, sleep, recovery and heart rate metrics, the absence of automatic activity tracking undercuts much of that value for casual users who might forget to manually initiate tracking before exercising. GPS performance also proved inconsistent during testing, with the watch occasionally failing to acquire a signal even in open outdoor areas without obstructions. Reviewers ultimately concluded that while the Moto Watch 2026 succeeds in offering an attractive, comfortable and long lasting device at an accessible price point, its software limitations leave it feeling like an imitation of a full featured smartwatch rather than a genuinely capable one, making it difficult to recommend to buyers seeking more than basic timekeeping and fitness tracking functionality.
