Authorities in Peshawar have ordered a temporary suspension of mobile phone services as part of an extended security plan for the 9th and 10th of Muharram. The measure began after Friday prayers on the 8th of Muharram and will remain in effect until 10 PM on the night of Ashura, Sunday. This decision is aimed at minimizing security threats and ensuring public safety during the observance of religious processions in the provincial capital.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the mobile service blackout is intended to maintain peace, particularly in areas identified as sensitive. Security officials have noted that such suspensions help prevent the misuse of communication networks and reduce the risk of any potential threats during large public gatherings. The restrictions cover voice, messaging, and internet services provided by mobile network operators.

The directive comes as part of a broader city-wide security deployment. Law enforcement has increased vigilance around procession routes with the help of technological tools, including drone-mounted cameras and real-time CCTV surveillance. These tools are being used to provide live monitoring of events across key neighborhoods and to assist police in crowd management and rapid response.

Officials emphasized that security personnel will be stationed in large numbers at strategic points throughout the city. These deployments include regular police forces, elite units, and plain-clothed intelligence personnel. Areas with dense foot traffic and historically large gatherings are receiving special attention to avoid any disruption during the solemn commemorations.

Citizens have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement authorities, adhere to all security advisories, and stay informed through official government channels. Local administration has requested the public to avoid unnecessary movement in restricted areas and to report any suspicious activity immediately. Public announcements have been issued to ensure awareness regarding the suspension timeline and the importance of the measures taken.

The suspension of mobile phone services during Muharram processions is a standard precaution followed in many cities across Pakistan during high-alert religious occasions. Such temporary blackouts are coordinated between law enforcement agencies and telecom providers under directives from provincial and federal authorities to manage law and order effectively.

The police have reassured the public that all necessary actions are being taken to preserve the sanctity of the religious events while ensuring the safety of participants. Surveillance teams will remain active throughout the duration of the processions, and regular patrols will continue across the city’s central and suburban areas. Authorities will resume normal mobile services once the risk period concludes and the situation is assessed to be stable.
