Microsoft has announced a significant update to Xbox consoles, enabling support for streaming games at 1440p resolution. The feature is available to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, allowing them to play games they own or are part of the Game Pass library at higher resolutions, provided their display and the game support it. Previously, 1440p streaming was restricted to select Fire TVs, LG and Samsung smart TVs, web browsers, and the Xbox PC app. This expansion now brings the capability directly to Xbox Series X, Series S, Xbox One X, and Xbox One consoles, offering a noticeable improvement for players who prioritize clarity and detail in streamed gameplay.

Alongside the new streaming option, Microsoft is making several improvements to the Xbox experience on PC and handheld devices. The Xbox PC app now introduces navigation sounds that respond to controller input, aiming to create a more intuitive and responsive user experience when navigating menus. On the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X handhelds, the company has simplified the process of formatting removable storage, such as microSD cards, and updated drivers to enhance compatibility across a selection of popular games. These updates demonstrate Microsoft’s ongoing focus on refining both hardware and software experiences for players, particularly in the expanding ecosystem of cloud and Game Pass streaming.

These changes come during a transitional period for Microsoft’s gaming division. Former Xbox head Phil Spencer recently announced his retirement, and Asha Sharma, the current President of Microsoft’s CoreAI division, has been appointed as his replacement. While opinions vary on how this leadership shift will affect Xbox, industry observers anticipate that additional updates and strategic changes may follow as Sharma establishes her approach to the division. Despite the leadership change, Microsoft continues to invest in technical improvements that enhance gaming performance and accessibility across its console and handheld platforms.

The introduction of 1440p streaming and complementary system enhancements underline Microsoft’s efforts to maintain a competitive edge in console gaming, where high-resolution streaming and seamless performance are increasingly critical to user satisfaction. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers in particular benefit from these updates, which align with the broader trend toward cloud-enabled gaming and device-agnostic play. With continued investments in user experience, display fidelity, and device interoperability, Microsoft aims to deliver a consistent and elevated gaming experience across its growing ecosystem of hardware and services.
