Lahore has taken a step toward sustainable policing with the launch of electric and hybrid patrol vehicles for the Traffic Police, establishing Punjab’s first Green Policing Unit. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the initiative and personally test-drove one of the vehicles, highlighting the government’s focus on modernizing traffic management while addressing environmental challenges. The project aligns with broader efforts in Punjab to promote cleaner transport and climate-conscious governance in urban centers.
The new patrol fleet consists of BYD electric vehicles equipped with advanced monitoring systems, 360-degree cameras, police lights, and public announcement facilities. Each vehicle is designed for city operations, offering a range of up to 410 kilometers on a single charge, with fast-charging technology capable of reaching 80 percent battery in just 30 minutes. Officials emphasized that these vehicles would enhance police visibility, improve response times, and deliver substantial reductions in fuel consumption and emissions, supporting cleaner air and more cost-effective operations.
Lahore Traffic Police will deploy the electric and hybrid vehicles for a variety of duties, including routine patrols, traffic signal monitoring, enforcement of violations, and rapid response to incidents. Authorities project that the new fleet could save around 4,500 liters of fuel annually, eliminating tailpipe emissions and demonstrating the tangible environmental benefits of adopting electric mobility in dense city environments. Early deployment has also provided opportunities to assess operational efficiency and the adaptability of electric vehicles to day-to-day policing requirements.
Encouraged by the initial rollout, Punjab government officials plan to expand the Green Policing Unit to other districts, aiming to establish eco-friendly law enforcement as a provincial standard. The program is seen as a way to modernize public safety while enhancing trust between authorities and citizens through visible adoption of sustainable technology. By integrating electric and hybrid patrol vehicles into traffic operations, Lahore is positioning itself as a model for environmentally conscious policing, demonstrating the potential for cleaner, smarter urban management in Pakistan’s largest cities.
