The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board (KPITB) has announced the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa AI Innovation Challenge 2026, inviting students, startups and developers to present ideas and build artificial intelligence-based solutions. The initiative aims to bring young innovators and technology entrepreneurs into a provincial competition focused on developing practical applications of AI. According to the announcement shared by KPITB, the challenge features three participation categories: AI Rising Stars for participants aged 12 to 17, AI Launchpad for startups, and AI Builders League for teams of three aged 18 and above. The programme is intended to provide an opportunity for participants at different stages of their academic and professional journeys to demonstrate their technical capabilities and propose solutions using emerging technologies. The announcement also highlights cash prizes totalling PKR 1 million, giving participants an incentive to develop ideas that can move beyond initial concepts and address practical challenges. Applications are open through the online registration platform, with November 10, 2026, set as the submission deadline.

The official AI Innovation Challenge platform outlines a wider programme covering schools and colleges, undergraduate and graduate students, and startups across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It describes the competition as a provincial initiative connecting technology builders with government departments to develop solutions for local requirements. Participants are encouraged to work on challenges across four thematic areas: Culture, Civics, Environment and Economy. The Culture stream includes applications such as speech recognition, translation and optical character recognition for regional languages, including Pashto, Hindko and Khowar. It also covers digital preservation of cultural archives, manuscripts and heritage collections. The Civics stream focuses on public services and community wellbeing, with potential applications in healthcare, education and citizen facilitation. Environment-related proposals can address issues such as flood and landslide early warning, agriculture, crop disease detection and water management. Meanwhile, the Economy stream encourages AI applications for trade logistics, local businesses, artisan markets and financial intelligence. These themes provide participants with a range of areas in which to identify problems and develop technology-led responses relevant to the province.

The competition is structured to accommodate different levels of technical experience and project development. School and college participants can present AI ideas and elevator pitches, while undergraduate students and recent graduates are expected to demonstrate working prototypes. Startup teams will have an opportunity to present their projects to evaluators and pursue further support. The official programme lists cash awards for school and college categories, with PKR 50,000 for first place, PKR 30,000 for second place and PKR 20,000 for third place. Undergraduate and graduate categories offer PKR 150,000, PKR 75,000 and PKR 50,000 for the respective positions. Startups may qualify for seed funding of up to PKR 1 million, along with incubation support. The programme also includes a 90-day KP AI Accelerator intended to help selected teams develop their projects further. The official platform identifies a three-day grand finale scheduled for November 13, 14 and 15, 2026, following the application period. It also highlights a special innovation quota for the merged and southern districts, with the aim of encouraging solutions based on the needs of communities in those areas.

Interested applicants can register through the official challenge website at aichallenge2026.kpitb.online before the November 10 deadline. The application process involves reviewing the eligibility requirements, selecting the relevant participation category, completing the applicant profile and describing the proposed AI idea or solution. Applicants must also identify the thematic area their project addresses and provide the required team information before submitting the form. The official portal states that applicants must have a Khyber Pakhtunkhwa domicile, while the programme is open to eligible participants across the province’s 35 districts. In addition to the main competition, the initiative includes KP AWAZ, a community voice-data project designed to support the development of speech technology for Pashto and other regional languages. Contributors can submit voluntary voice recordings to help create datasets for language-related AI research, with separate prizes available for leading contributors. Through these activities, KPITB is seeking to connect provincial talent with AI development, encourage locally relevant technology projects and create pathways for promising ideas to progress towards prototypes and potential implementation.
