Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved a significant initiative aimed at boosting the province’s technological and educational infrastructure through the establishment of a state-of-the-art Innovation Hub at the University of Peshawar, along with the launch of Digital Connect centers across all divisional headquarters. The decision was finalized in a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Friday, with a focus on transforming the landscape of higher education and digital access for the youth of the region.
The Innovation Hub is set to be developed within the existing Incubation Center building at the University of Peshawar, which will be restructured to house 22 private offices, two expansive event halls, fully-equipped conference rooms, and modern co-working spaces. This comprehensive facility is envisioned as a catalyst for innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration, particularly among students, startups, and small IT enterprises. According to officials present at the meeting, the Innovation Hub is projected to generate an annual revenue of Rs. 60 million for the university, while also serving as a launchpad for young professionals seeking opportunities in the digital economy.
By providing all necessary support services under one roof—including mentoring, networking, and access to resources—the Innovation Hub will foster an environment conducive to business development, technological experimentation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. It marks a deliberate shift toward integrating academia with the tech industry and is expected to play a vital role in nurturing a future-ready workforce.
In tandem with the university initiative, the provincial government has given principle approval for establishing Digital Connect centers at all divisional headquarters. These centers will initially operate out of rented facilities but are expected to evolve into permanent institutions. Each Digital Connect center will comprise IT parks, shared office spaces, and computer laboratories, designed to serve as hubs of skill development and job creation. The primary objective is to provide youth across the province with direct access to digital tools, training, and employment pathways, especially in areas that currently lack strong IT infrastructure.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Gandapur reiterated his administration’s resolve to transform Khyber Pakhtunkhwa into a digitally empowered province. “We are determined to create a tech-friendly ecosystem and equip our youth with cutting-edge opportunities,” he stated, adding that swift implementation is key to achieving the long-term vision. He also hinted at plans to replicate the Innovation Hub model in other universities if the pilot project at Peshawar proves successful.
The meeting was attended by Shafqat Ayaz, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for IT, as well as secretaries of the higher education and IT departments and other senior government officials. All present were in agreement that initiatives like the Innovation Hub and Digital Connect centers are not only crucial for the digital evolution of the province but also for building a robust pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute to Pakistan’s growing IT and startup sectors. With digital transformation high on the government’s agenda, these projects signal a major step forward in bridging the gap between education and industry, while also ensuring that the youth of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are not left behind in the global digital revolution.
