Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced plans to establish electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the city as part of its broader strategy to promote sustainable transportation and reduce air pollution. The initiative, led by Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, aims to accelerate the adoption of eco-friendly vehicles in Pakistan’s largest metropolis while supporting the country’s commitment to renewable energy and clean mobility. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting held at the KMC Head Office, where officials discussed implementation timelines and key development areas for the project.
According to details shared after the meeting, the first phase of installation will focus on high-traffic corridors such as Shahrah-e-Faisal, Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road, and Stadium Road. These locations were selected strategically to ensure accessibility for a wide range of users, including daily commuters and commercial vehicle operators. Mayor Wahab emphasized that the initiative reflects Karachi’s ambition to transition toward a greener and smarter urban future, underscoring the need for sustainable alternatives to conventional fuel-based transport. He stated that the project is not limited to infrastructure installation but forms part of a long-term plan to reshape the city’s mobility landscape. By creating an environment that supports electric vehicles, the administration aims to set the foundation for cleaner air, reduced noise pollution, and a more energy-efficient transportation system.
The Mayor also confirmed that KMC will allocate land for the stations and oversee construction using its own resources to expedite development. He said that establishing these facilities is both a necessity and an opportunity to demonstrate Karachi’s potential as a progressive, environmentally responsible city. Wahab added that the project aligns with national sustainability goals and supports Pakistan’s broader commitments under global environmental frameworks. “This is about providing citizens with the tools and infrastructure they need to make environmentally conscious choices,” he said, noting that a gradual shift toward electric mobility can play a significant role in improving urban living standards.
The meeting, attended by senior officials including Financial Advisor KMC Gulzar Abro, Director Media KMC Daniyal Alishan, and Deputy Director Planning Musheer Mahar, focused on defining operational frameworks and ensuring smooth coordination among departments involved in the project. Participants discussed technical requirements for EV charging points, safety standards, and the need to establish partnerships with private-sector energy providers to expand capacity in later phases. Officials also reviewed options for integrating renewable energy sources into the charging infrastructure, which would further reduce the city’s carbon footprint and operational costs over time.
This initiative comes at a time when electric vehicle adoption in Pakistan is gradually increasing, driven by growing environmental awareness, fluctuating fuel prices, and new government incentives for EV manufacturers. Karachi, as the country’s most populated and industrialized city, faces unique challenges in balancing urban growth with environmental preservation. KMC’s decision to introduce a network of EV charging stations positions the city as a pioneer in green urban mobility, setting an example for other municipal administrations. By investing in sustainable transport solutions, the city aims to move closer to achieving long-term environmental resilience while enhancing convenience for residents seeking cleaner, cost-effective commuting options.
