Karachi police have sacked a man identified as Sameer after allegations surfaced that he accessed the mobile data and social media accounts of more than 100 women through suspicious links. The incident has gained attention due to the simplicity and low cost of the hacking tools involved, which Sameer reportedly bought for Rs. 5,000 from a seller based in Lahore. The case highlights growing concerns around online security and the increasing vulnerability of social media users to digital manipulation.
According to investigators, Sameer stated during questioning that he focused on women who were active on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. He reportedly sent malicious links that enabled him to gain entry into their devices once clicked. The access allowed him to enter their Google accounts and download full phone data which included private images, videos, and other personal information. Authorities noted that the activity was not random and appeared to be part of a planned effort targeting female users on popular platforms. The tactic relied on trust and curiosity, making it easier for him to convince potential victims to interact with the links without immediate suspicion.
Investigators shared that Sameer admitted to using the obtained content to pressure women into maintaining communication and attempting to build personal connections with them. In some instances, he tried to convince them to meet in person by leveraging the information he had gathered. Officials stated that the intention behind the data access was not financial gain but rather personal influence and manipulation. The case further revealed that Sameer had educational exposure only up to seventh grade and did not hold current employment. He claimed that he learned these techniques through an online group that discussed methods of unauthorized access and shared tools designed for data extraction. His actions, as per the investigation, were ongoing for an extended period, involving multiple individuals across different areas of the city.
The situation escalated when a recent attempt involving a girl from Ranchore Lines came under scrutiny, leading to police action and ultimately resulting in him being sacked. Investigators emphasized that the case underscores the need for public awareness about suspicious links and the risks associated with sharing devices or accounts with unknown contacts. The accessibility of hacking tools at a low cost and the ease of exploiting gaps in digital behavior present challenges for users who may not be familiar with cybersecurity practices. The incident also brings into focus the importance for social media users to enable security features, avoid interacting with unfamiliar links, and regularly update passwords to protect personal information. With the rise of online platforms and increased reliance on digital communication, the case serves as a reminder that vigilance and digital literacy are crucial in preventing unauthorized access and personal data misuse.
