Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is reportedly returning to an operational role through his involvement in Project Prometheus, a new artificial intelligence venture that has attracted significant attention after raising 6.2 billion dollars in funding. According to a report from The New York Times, Bezos is financially backing the startup and will also take on responsibilities as co chief executive. This marks his first return to hands on operations since stepping away from Amazon in 2021. The report indicates that the move aligns with his increasing focus on advanced technology initiatives and long term innovation projects.

Bezos will share leadership with Vik Bajaj, who has an extensive background in technology and scientific research. Bajaj previously co founded Google’s life sciences division and helped establish Verily, a biotech organisation within Alphabet. He is also a co founder of Foresite Labs, an AI aligned initiative connected to investment firm Foresite Capital. Reports suggest that Bajaj recently exited his previous commitments to lead Project Prometheus full time. Both executives are set to guide the startup toward the development of artificial intelligence tools designed for engineering and manufacturing applications across sectors such as computing, aerospace and automotive systems. The company outlines on its LinkedIn page that its mission is to advance AI for the physical economy by creating systems that can simulate real world environments to enhance productivity and accelerate research.

Sources cited by the NYT report describe Project Prometheus as similar in direction to Periodic Labs, a company working on technologies that model aspects of the physical world to train artificial intelligence models and improve scientific workflows. The scale of the new company is already notable, with almost 100 employees including researchers and engineers from prominent AI organisations such as Meta, OpenAI and Google DeepMind. This indicates that the startup is moving quickly to establish itself within the expanding AI sector, which is increasingly focused on specialised applications that extend beyond general consumer services. Although the company has not yet unveiled specific products, its recruitment pace and funding suggest a strong commitment to developing tools capable of supporting high precision industrial processes.

Amazon and Vik Bajaj did not respond to requests for comment, according to the report. The startup’s emergence highlights a trend among major technology figures who have stepped back from corporate leadership and are now revisiting roles that involve direct oversight of research driven projects. Project Prometheus is expected to compete in an area of artificial intelligence that requires substantial computing resources and deep scientific expertise. Its direction appears consistent with Bezos’ previous interests in high technology, scientific exploration and long term industrial transformation. As development continues, the involvement of high profile leaders and experienced researchers positions the company as a significant new entrant in the global AI landscape.
