The Ministry of IT and Telecom is gearing up to present the mobile phone financing policy to the newly appointed Minister of State for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawja. The policy will undergo review by the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Finance before being presented to the federal cabinet for final approval.
Drafted in November of last year, the policy has undergone rigorous scrutiny and fine-tuning, paving the way for its imminent presentation before the federal cabinet. Once approved, the Ministry of IT and Telecom plans to roll out a cell phone financing program aimed at offering interest-free installment plans, thereby democratizing access to cutting-edge technology.
A key highlight of the policy is its stringent measures to address defaulters. Individuals failing to meet their installment obligations risk having their mobile phones blocked, serving as a deterrent against misuse and promoting responsible ownership.
Beyond its financing mechanisms, the policy emphasizes effective enforcement, with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) playing a pivotal role in implementation. Leveraging its Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS), the PTA will ensure seamless execution of measures to block devices in cases of non-compliance.
According to the Ministry of IT and Telecom, the policy underscores the government’s commitment to digital inclusion and bridging the technological gap. By making smartphones more accessible through installment plans, the initiative aims to empower individuals from all walks of life to leverage the transformative potential of modern technology.
