Federal Minister of Information Technology and Telecommunication, Syed Amin Ul Haque, called for stricter penalties to be imposed on telecom companies that fail to enhance the quality of their services. During a briefing to the National Assembly Committee on IT & Telecom in Islamabad, the minister emphasized the need for a change in mindset among telcos to improve their service standards. He advocated for larger fines to be imposed on operators who do not take appropriate measures to address service quality issues.
In a subsequent discussion with journalists, Haque revealed that the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) is prioritizing the formulation of social media rules, and the framework has reached its final stage. He further stated that relevant regulations in this regard will soon be presented to the federal cabinet for approval.
When queried about the prevalence of anti-state and blasphemous content on social media platforms, the minister assured that efforts are underway to block such content. He emphasized that while individuals have the right to freedom of speech, it must be exercised within the boundaries set by the rules and Constitution of Pakistan.
