The Higher Education Commission has formally granted permission to Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Shaheed Benazirabad to launch a Doctor of Philosophy programme in its Department of Sindhi Language and Literature, marking a significant milestone in the academic preservation and advancement of one of Pakistan’s oldest and most widely spoken regional languages. An official notification has been issued following recommendations by the Higher Education Commission Sindh and the sustained efforts of Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Madad Ali Shah.

The approval opens formal doctoral research pathways for young scholars in Sindh who wish to pursue advanced academic work in their mother tongue, covering Sindhi history, literature, culture, intellectual traditions, and cultural identity. Until now, researchers interested in these subjects had limited institutional options for doctoral-level study within Pakistan, leaving a significant gap in the country’s academic infrastructure for one of its most historically and culturally rich regional languages.

Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Madad Ali Shah acknowledged the contributions of departmental faculty including Dr Ameer Ali Shah, Dr Phulo Sundar Meghwar, Dr Sikandar Ahmed, and Dr Khalid Sahil in achieving this milestone within a comparatively short period. He stated that the programme would help produce researchers capable of introducing Sindh’s language, literature, history, and culture to the international academic community, extending the reach of Sindhi scholarship beyond domestic institutions and into global academic discourse.

The initiative reflects Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University’s broader commitment to preserving and developing Pakistan’s regional languages through structured higher education, creating pathways for the next generation of scholars to carry forward the intellectual traditions that have historically distinguished Sindh’s academic and literary culture. The development is also being viewed as a positive step toward strengthening the formal academic status of the Sindhi language and creating better educational opportunities for future generations of researchers across the province.
