Google Updates Family Link Policy Requiring Parental Approval For Teens Managing Accounts

Google has announced a significant update to its Family Link program, changing how teenagers transition to managing their own Google accounts. Previously, minors supervised through Family Link could independently opt out of parental controls once they turned 13. However, starting this week, Google will require explicit parental approval before a teen can take full control of their account. This new policy applies globally and aims to ensure that protections remain active until both parents and teens agree to the transition.

Kate Charlet, Google’s head of global privacy, safety, and security, explained in a LinkedIn post that these changes are designed to provide stronger safeguards during the critical period when young users begin managing their digital lives. The updated approach balances giving teens more autonomy while maintaining parental involvement to help guide responsible account management. This shift reflects increasing attention to online safety and privacy concerns as younger users engage more deeply with digital platforms and services.

By requiring parental consent, Google seeks to create a more collaborative process between families, reducing risks related to premature removal of safeguards. This change aligns with broader industry trends prioritizing digital well-being and child protection. It also addresses the complexities of ensuring age-appropriate privacy controls in an evolving online environment. For parents, the update offers reassurance that their children’s accounts will not lose protection without their knowledge, helping maintain a shared understanding of online safety practices.

The policy revision signals Google’s ongoing commitment to refining its family and privacy tools in response to feedback and regulatory expectations worldwide. As digital ecosystems continue to adapt to the needs of younger users and their guardians, Google’s updated Family Link model aims to support healthy, secure experiences while fostering gradual digital independence. Users can find more information and guidance about managing Family Link settings through Google’s official support resources.
