Google has introduced a groundbreaking feature called Ask for Me, which leverages artificial intelligence to help users make phone calls to local businesses without having to dial the number or speak directly to a representative. The feature, still in the testing phase, is being made available to users enrolled in Google’s Search Labs, which grants access to experimental tools. For now, Ask for Me can be accessed on both desktop and mobile versions of Google Search.

The aim of Ask for Me is to make the process of gathering information from local businesses more efficient by removing the need for users to make phone calls themselves. Instead of taking time out of their day to inquire about the availability, pricing, or specific services offered by a business, users can simply let Google’s AI handle the call for them. This tool is designed to benefit those seeking services from businesses such as nail salons and auto repair shops, with these sectors being the initial targets for this feature.

To use Ask for Me, users need to search for local services, such as “nail salons nearby” or “oil change,” through Google. Upon conducting a search, they will be presented with an option to click “Ask for me” followed by a “Get started” button. Once activated, the feature prompts the user to provide specific details about the service they are seeking, such as the type of manicure (e.g., French manicure) or a particular auto repair service (e.g., tire replacement). Users will also be asked to indicate a preferred time frame for the service. From there, Google’s AI takes over, placing calls to relevant local businesses, gathering information about pricing, availability, and any additional service details, and then summarizing this information for the user.

This innovation is part of Google’s broader initiative to improve user experience by leveraging AI to automate everyday tasks. Ask for Me is designed to save users time and streamline the process of gathering information, eliminating the need for them to interact directly with businesses. The feature is positioned to be especially useful in situations where users need quick answers but would rather avoid lengthy phone calls or waiting periods.

In addition to Ask for Me, Google is rolling out other AI-powered features, such as Talk to a Live Rep. This tool is designed to assist users by automatically managing the waiting period when contacting a customer service representative. The AI system guides users through the process, ensuring they are connected with the appropriate person as soon as possible, enhancing the efficiency of customer service interactions. Furthermore, Google has introduced the Daily Listen feature, which uses AI to curate personalized audio content, delivering news updates tailored to individual preferences and saving users time by offering them news in an audio format that fits their schedule.

As Ask for Me continues its testing phase, it marks a significant milestone in AI’s potential to change the way consumers interact with businesses. If successful, the feature could revolutionize how people conduct everyday tasks like service inquiries, making it easier, faster, and more convenient. By automating phone calls and simplifying the process of gathering essential information, Google is paving the way for more seamless interactions between consumers and local businesses, ultimately benefiting both parties. As AI continues to evolve, tools like Ask for Me are set to redefine how users engage with the services they need.
