Google is expanding a smart feature in Meet designed to simplify joining group calls and reduce audio feedback issues. Initially launched for desktop users in August 2025, the feature is now rolling out to Android and iOS devices over the next two weeks. The update aims to streamline meeting experiences for both Google Meet and Gmail users, ensuring that participants can join calls with fewer delays and disruptions.
The functionality, called companion mode, detects when a user enters a conference room with other participants. Once the device recognizes the shared space, it automatically opens Meet on the user’s phone or tablet and joins the same call without causing echo or feedback. This allows multiple devices to be used in the same room, making in-person meetings feel more connected while preventing common audio issues that occur when several devices are on the same call.
Companion mode relies on the device’s microphone to detect ultrasonic signals in the room, confirming the user’s presence in the shared space. Once verified, the device checks the user into the correct group call automatically. The feature now functions across both Meet and Gmail apps, ensuring broader accessibility. On Android and iOS, users need to be running Meet version 336.0, while Gmail requires version 2025.12.01 on Android and version 6.0.251201 on iOS to enable the feature.
The update is available to all Google Workspace customers, including Workspace Individual subscribers. By introducing this functionality to mobile platforms, Google aims to make joining hybrid or in-person meetings smoother and more efficient, reducing the need for manual call setup and minimizing technical interruptions. The move highlights Google’s ongoing focus on improving collaboration tools and creating a more seamless meeting experience for professional and personal users alike.
