Google has finally addressed one of the longest-standing frustrations of its email platform, allowing users to change their Gmail address handles without losing access to their existing correspondence. The feature, officially announced on Google’s blog The Keyword, is currently available to users in the United States only, leaving international users to wait for a wider rollout at a later date.
The problem that prompted this update is one many long-time internet users will recognise all too well. Most people create their first email address at a young age, often choosing a handle that felt perfectly sensible at the time but becomes something of an embarrassment years later. Until now, Gmail users faced a stark choice: either stick with an address they had outgrown, or abandon it entirely and spend considerable time updating every linked account and service. Google’s new feature changes that calculus entirely. Users can now visit their Google Account settings, navigate to Personal Info, then Email, and then Google Account Email, where those eligible for a name change will find a prominently placed option to update their handle. Crucially, Google has built in a practical safeguard for the transition period: emails sent to both the old and new addresses will arrive in the same inbox simultaneously, meaning users do not need to rush through updating every platform and service that holds their previous address on record.
However, the feature comes with one significant condition that users should weigh carefully before proceeding. Google has imposed a 12-month cooldown period following any address change, which means that once a new handle is selected, it cannot be altered again for an entire year. Any typographical errors or second thoughts that arise after confirming the change will simply have to be tolerated until the cooldown period expires. The practical advice for anyone considering making use of this feature is to be entirely certain of the new address before submitting it, as there is no quick correction mechanism available once the change has been locked in. For US-based Gmail users who have long wanted to shed an outdated or regrettable address, the feature offers a meaningful degree of flexibility, provided they approach the process with sufficient care.
