Professor Dr. Zabta Khan Shinwari, vice chancellor of the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST), has been elected a Fellow of the International Science Council (ISC), bringing international recognition to Pakistan’s scientific and academic community. The council announced his election on October 16, 2026, as part of its latest cohort of Fellows from around the world. The selection recognises scientists and other experts who have contributed to advancing science and promoting its role in society. Dr. Shinwari is among two Pakistani scientists named in the announcement, alongside Professor Zulfiqar Bhutta. The recognition places both researchers within an international network focused on scientific cooperation and the use of research to address issues affecting people and communities.
The International Science Council is a global organisation that promotes international scientific collaboration and advocates for the use of scientific knowledge in public policy and decision-making. Its Fellowship recognises individuals who have made notable contributions to science and support the council’s vision of science as a global public good. According to the ISC, its Fellowship brings together experts from different countries, disciplines and professional backgrounds to encourage cooperation between scientific communities and improve the contribution of research to society. The 2026 cohort represents nearly 30 countries and includes scientists, policymakers and research leaders working across a range of fields. Fellows contribute their expertise and networks to support scientific dialogue and promote the responsible use of evidence in addressing global challenges.
Dr. Shinwari is an internationally recognised biological scientist whose research career includes work in biotechnology and biological sciences. His professional background spans academic leadership, scientific research and institutional development. The ISC profile records his previous appointments at several research and educational organisations in Pakistan, including Quaid-i-Azam University, Kohat University of Science and Technology and the National Agricultural Research Centre. His research has included the study of plant genes associated with traits such as drought, cold and stress tolerance. He has also supervised postgraduate researchers, authored and edited scientific publications, and contributed to research presentations and academic activities. His scientific contributions have been recognised through national honours, including the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz and Sitara-i-Imtiaz, as well as international recognition for his work in science and research ethics.
Dr. Shinwari’s election also brings attention to the role of Pakistani universities in connecting local research with international scientific networks. As vice chancellor of FUUAST, he occupies a leadership position at a public-sector university with programmes spanning arts, sciences and technology. International scientific recognition can create opportunities to expand academic engagement, exchange research expertise and encourage collaboration between institutions. The ISC Fellowship is particularly focused on advancing scientific cooperation and promoting the contribution of evidence-based knowledge to public policy and societal development. While the appointment itself does not establish new research funding or institutional agreements, it gives Pakistan representation within a global community of scientists and research leaders. The participation of Pakistani researchers in such networks can help sustain international dialogue, increase the visibility of local scientific work and support connections between universities and the wider research community.
