Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has announced a major step toward digital inclusion and infrastructure development by confirming that 40 railway stations across Punjab will be equipped with free Wi-Fi services. This initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize Pakistan Railways, with the Punjab government committing Rs. 350 billion to upgrade eight branch routes across the province.
In a media interview, the minister highlighted that the Pakistan Railways modernization drive is focused on aligning systems and infrastructure with international standards. He emphasized that improving governance and introducing modern technologies is central to the government’s railway strategy. The installation of free internet services at key stations is aimed at enhancing the commuter experience and promoting greater digital access for the public.
The plan is closely linked to the development of the Main Line 1 (ML1) project, which remains a priority under current federal infrastructure goals. According to the minister, once ML1 becomes operational, it will have a transformative impact on public transportation. Preparations for investment in the ML2 corridor are also in progress, signaling long-term commitments to modern rail mobility in Pakistan.
Discussions are ongoing with the Sindh government for similar collaborative efforts to upgrade railway routes and facilities in the province. The federal and provincial partnerships are designed to distribute resources toward enhancing branch lines and revamping passenger amenities. The free Wi-Fi initiative at Punjab stations is one of several digital interventions being considered as part of a wider e-governance and smart infrastructure approach.
While addressing questions about national defense and recent border tensions with India, Hanif Abbasi noted that Pakistan successfully shot down six aircraft during the 10th May conflict, all while operating within its territorial limits. He reiterated the government’s stance, referencing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s declaration that any attempt to block Pakistan’s water supply would be regarded as an act of war. He also recognized the support Pakistan received from China, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, and Turkey during the standoff.
The minister further emphasized the unity of the Pakistani people during times of crisis, stating that citizens across all regions—including Balochistan, Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and southern belt communities—stood in solidarity with the Pakistan Army.
The introduction of free internet at railway stations reflects the growing integration of technology into public infrastructure and is part of efforts to improve passenger convenience and digital access.
