Federal Government Launches Free E-Bike Scheme for Students and Unemployed to Promote EV Adoption

The federal government has approved the distribution of free electric bikes to high-performing students across all educational boards in Pakistan, including the Federal Board. This initiative is part of a broader national program that also includes the provision of electric rickshaws and loaders to unemployed individuals, aimed at promoting sustainable transportation and creating economic opportunities.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting to review the progress of the electric mobility support program, where he reiterated the long-term environmental and economic value of transitioning to electric vehicles. He noted that expanding the use of EVs would significantly reduce Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuel, contributing to savings in foreign exchange and environmental protection, while also stimulating growth in the local electric vehicle manufacturing sector.

The electric bike scheme is designed to reward academic excellence and offer mobility support to students who have demonstrated exceptional performance. Shehbaz Sharif directed that special attention be given to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, ensuring that support is extended to those who need it most. Transparent distribution mechanisms are being emphasized to maintain credibility and accountability in the execution of the program.

In addition to student support, the government will distribute electric rickshaws and loaders to unemployed individuals across Pakistan. These vehicles are expected to serve as income-generating tools, allowing recipients to participate in local transport and delivery sectors. The program aims to contribute to job creation while encouraging the use of environmentally friendly vehicles in daily commerce.

To support the rollout and maintenance of these initiatives, the prime minister has called for the establishment of a robust ecosystem for electric vehicle manufacturing, servicing, and spare parts. Relevant departments have been instructed to coordinate on a national level to ensure that infrastructure, certification, and training resources are aligned with the needs of a growing EV sector. Third-party validation of the distribution process will be implemented to guarantee transparency, and an awareness campaign will be launched to educate the public on how to benefit from these schemes.

Federal agencies, including the Federal Board of Revenue, will collaborate on drafting a comprehensive implementation roadmap. The multi-agency coordination is aimed at accelerating Pakistan’s shift to sustainable transport while addressing unemployment and improving mobility for deserving students. The initiative reflects a strategic approach to integrating green technology into daily life, supporting environmental goals alongside socio-economic development.
