Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has reached out to provincial authorities, urging them to suggest any modifications to the current legislative framework governing the implementation of the Single Sales Tax Return (SSTR) for the telecom industry.

In correspondence issued on Wednesday, the FBR highlighted its commitment to facilitating taxpayers, enhancing the ease of doing business, and minimizing compliance burdens. In collaboration with Provincial Tax Authorities, the FBR introduced the SSTR for the telecom sector nationwide through a circular dated February 1, 2024.

The development of the SSTR followed extensive negotiations between the FBR, Provincial Revenue Administrations, and representatives from the Telecom Sector, as part of the efforts spearheaded by the Committee formed under Notification No. 2878-IR-I/ 2023 dated October 20, 2023, for the Design Development & Implementation of a Single Portal.

Telecom companies have already utilized the SSTR to submit their returns for the month of January 2024, demonstrating initial implementation success.

Given that the SSTR aligns with the existing legal framework for Sales Tax at both federal and provincial levels, any proposed alterations to Sales Tax Rules necessitate thorough backend development to ensure continued alignment with applicable laws, rules, and procedures.

In light of this, the FBR has urged provinces to communicate any proposed changes to the legislative framework for Sales Tax Returns promptly. This proactive approach ensures that potential adjustments are thoroughly evaluated and that provincial revenue authorities are duly consulted, maintaining cohesion in the implementation of the Single Sales Tax Return system.
