In a concerted effort to address critical challenges facing the Internet Service Provider (ISP) industry, leading figures gathered at the annual conference of the Wireless & Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan (WISPAP). Key discussions centered on the establishment of internet exchanges as a cornerstone for enhancing data security across the nation.
Founder Chairman of WISPAP, Shahzad Arshad, underscored the pivotal role of internet exchanges in securing the country’s data. Expressing concern about the industry’s current state, Arshad emphasized the necessity for widespread participation within the Internet service community, particularly in providing services to remote areas.
During the conference, the organization unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at extending internet access to every corner of the country. This initiative involves the creation of Internet Exchanges and addressing challenges faced by ISPs, with plans to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Information Technology.
Shahzad Arshad, acting chairman of the Organization for Wireless and Internet Service Providers, highlighted the significance of Internet Exchanges, drawing parallels with successful models in countries like India. These exchanges empower ISPs to offer unlimited access to local traffic, eliminating the burden of foreign exchange costs.
Expressing the organization’s commitment to securing basic rights for internet industry stakeholders, Arshad stressed the urgency of promptly resolving industry challenges. Furqan Naveed Ahmed, Project Director of WISPAP, issued a warning about the sector’s current crisis, citing unresolved issues that jeopardize the livelihoods of numerous families.
Ahmed cautioned that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s reluctance to renew fundamental licenses poses a severe threat to the industry, potentially leading to the loss of livelihoods for millions. Founding Director Shoaib Ahmed Khan lamented the impact on hundreds of families whose well-being is intricately linked to the industry.
CEOs from various ISPs, present at the meeting, stressed the urgent need to resolve industry issues for the well-being of millions of households relying on internet-related employment. Despite the challenges, the gathering showcased a united front from the Internet services community, signaling a collective commitment to overcoming obstacles and fostering a robust and secure internet landscape for Pakistan.
