Dr. Adil Haider, a globally recognized surgeon-scientist and founder of Boston Health AI, has been appointed as the inaugural Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer at Carle Illinois College of Medicine, the world’s first engineering-based medical school. In this role, he will oversee the responsible deployment of artificial intelligence across medical education, research, and clinical operations, integrating AI into both the academic and patient care environments. His appointment reflects the growing emphasis on AI as a core component of modern medicine.

Dr. Haider’s career spans multiple countries and domains, combining clinical excellence, academic leadership, and health technology innovation. He joins Carle Illinois following a transformative tenure as Dean of Aga Khan University Medical College in Pakistan, where he led one of the most ambitious periods of growth in the institution’s history. Under his leadership, research funding quadrupled, the college achieved top-100 global ranking status, and it earned multiple international accreditations, including ACGME-International and AACME. Known for his accessibility and mentorship, Dr. Haider became a favorite among students, often noted for his engagement with learners and his signature sneakers.

At Carle Illinois, Dr. Haider will guide how AI is governed, evaluated, and integrated across medicine, engineering, and data science, ensuring that innovation is clinically relevant and patient-centered. He will also serve as Medical Director for Research Informatics at Carle Foundation Hospital and as a Visiting Professor in the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science within Grainger College of Engineering. These roles aim to bridge the gap between academic research, engineering, and real-world healthcare delivery. Dean Mark Cohen of CI MED emphasized that Dr. Haider’s leadership signals that artificial intelligence is a foundational element in the future of medical education and innovation.

Dr. Haider’s professional journey includes nearly a decade at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as a trauma surgeon and founding director of the Center for Surgical Trials and Outcomes Research, as well as leadership of the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has authored over 450 peer-reviewed publications and secured more than USD 200 million in research funding, mentoring over 150 trainees worldwide. In 2024, he founded Boston Health AI, which operates in the United States, United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan, focusing on ethical, scalable AI solutions in healthcare, including Hami, the world’s first AI-clinical intelligence companion.

Dr. Haider has stated that technology alone does not transform healthcare and emphasized the importance of trust, context, and clinical relevance in AI deployment. His appointment at Carle Illinois positions him to shape AI-driven innovation at the intersection of medicine, engineering, and data science. By advancing AI education, translational research, and clinical application, he aims to improve care for patients globally while maintaining ethical and evidence-based standards. His career exemplifies the integration of academic excellence and technological innovation in modern medicine.
