Professor Dr. Hammad Umer, Head of the International Office at COMSATS University Islamabad, recently met with Nasir Mansoor Qureshi, President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), to discuss the pressing need for advancing Pakistan’s knowledge economy. The focus of their conversation was to explore innovative ways to bridge the gap between academia and industry, with an emphasis on fostering entrepreneurship and creating stronger linkages between universities and the business community.
During their meeting, Dr. Umer highlighted that Pakistan’s economic future depends on a shift from traditional methods of industrial and business growth to a model that actively encourages entrepreneurship. He emphasized that universities, particularly COMSATS University, have a critical role to play in this transformation. Dr. Umer shared that COMSATS currently boasts a vast pool of over 1,100 PhD-qualified professionals engaged in cutting-edge research. While this research holds immense potential for driving economic growth, he stressed that it needs to be translated into practical, market-driven solutions to address the challenges faced by industries. This requires strong collaboration between the academic and business sectors.
In this regard, Dr. Umer appealed to the business community, represented by the ICCI, to prioritize investment in research and development (R&D). He pointed out that for Pakistan to remain competitive in the global market, it is essential to create products that align with market demands, particularly those driven by technological advancements. Dr. Umer noted that COMSATS is ready to partner with the ICCI to ensure that the research produced is not only innovative but also applicable in real-world industries, paving the way for further innovation and economic growth.
Nasir Mansoor Qureshi, in response, expressed full support for Dr. Umer’s vision. He acknowledged the critical role that universities and academia play in shaping the future economy and emphasized that ICCI is committed to enhancing partnerships between the business sector and educational institutions. President Qureshi mentioned that ICCI had already signed multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with regional universities, underscoring their role in strengthening industry-academia linkages. He stressed that these collaborations are crucial for transforming academic research into practical, real-world business solutions that can drive national economic development.
To further support this vision, Qureshi outlined ICCI’s upcoming initiatives to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation. One notable initiative is a competition aimed at university graduates to showcase their entrepreneurial skills. The competition will offer cash awards to the winners as a way to incentivize creativity and innovation among the youth. This aligns with ICCI’s broader goal of fostering a culture of entrepreneurship, providing young graduates with the necessary platform to transform their ideas into viable business ventures.
Moreover, President Qureshi assured Dr. Umer that ICCI would actively work with COMSATS University to facilitate the implementation of these ideas. He expressed confidence that such initiatives would create deeper, more meaningful collaborations between academia and industry, contributing to the broader goal of economic prosperity in Pakistan.
Looking to the future, Qureshi pledged to visit COMSATS University personally, along with ICCI’s portfolio and executive members. The visit will involve a tour of the university’s research facilities to better understand the potential for collaboration and identify areas where the business community can support ongoing research. Qureshi noted that this partnership would benefit both universities and businesses, creating a “win-win” situation that would drive the economic prosperity of Pakistan.
Overall, the discussion between Dr. Umer and President Qureshi marked a significant step forward in fostering collaboration between academia and the business sector. Their commitment to building stronger linkages between universities and industry holds the potential to unlock new avenues for innovation and entrepreneurship, ultimately contributing to the development of a thriving knowledge economy in Pakistan.
