BEIJING: China and Pakistan have taken another significant step in their growing technological collaboration as Chinese satellite operator PIESAT signed a 2.9 billion yuan (approximately $400 million) agreement to assist Islamabad in developing an independent satellite network. Announced at the recent China-Pakistan B2B investment conference, the deal is aimed at building a dedicated satellite constellation that will support real-time communications and remote sensing capabilities for Pakistan. This marks a major boost for the country’s space and technology ambitions, providing new infrastructure that is expected to enhance operational efficiency across multiple sectors.

Under this agreement, PIESAT will help Pakistan establish and manage its own satellite network instead of relying solely on foreign systems. Analysts suggest that by creating a dedicated constellation, Pakistan will be able to strengthen its data transmission, disaster management, environmental monitoring, and security-related communications. Such an initiative not only increases the nation’s technological self-reliance but also strengthens the long-standing strategic partnership between Beijing and Islamabad. For China, it represents an opportunity to expand its commercial satellite services to a key partner country in South Asia, aligning with broader regional cooperation goals.

This is not the first time PIESAT has entered into a collaborative project with Pakistan. In June last year, the company signed a 200 million yuan (about $27 million) agreement to provide smart agriculture technology for a large-scale farm project in Bahawalpur. That initiative highlighted the potential of satellite data in transforming Pakistan’s agricultural sector by enabling precision farming, improved water management, and efficient resource use. The new satellite network project builds on that momentum, extending cooperation into more advanced and sensitive areas of space technology.

PIESAT, a leading provider of satellite operation and application services, specializes in solutions for disaster mitigation, natural resource management, and environmental monitoring. The company has a track record of working with international partners to deliver high-end satellite-based services. Its partnership with Pakistan is expected to create opportunities for sustainable growth and high-tech development, bringing tangible benefits not only for national infrastructure but also for industries such as telecommunications, agriculture, urban planning, and public safety. Observers note that this latest agreement could accelerate knowledge transfer, create specialized skill requirements, and broaden the scope of Pakistan’s space capabilities while deepening bilateral economic ties between the two countries.
