The era of uncontested dominance for OpenAI appears to be facing its first significant challenge. A new report from Sensor Tower reveals that while ChatGPT continues to lead the generative AI market, its growth has slowed considerably. The platform still commands the largest global install base with 940 million all-time downloads through June 2025, but its monthly active user numbers show only a modest 6 percent increase between August and November. Analysts note that saturation in key markets and plateauing user acquisition are contributing to this slowdown, despite highly engaged users averaging 13 days of activity per month, similar to social media apps like X.

Meanwhile, competitors are capitalizing on ChatGPT’s plateau to gain traction. Google’s Gemini has seen a 30 percent increase in monthly active users over the same period, driven largely by the viral success of its “Nano Banana” image generation model introduced in September. Gemini’s integration with Android has further amplified adoption, allowing the app to capitalize on app store search trends and secure a top position for AI-related keywords. Daily engagement for Gemini users has more than doubled since March, now averaging 11 minutes per day. This performance suggests Google’s AI strategy is effectively converting casual users into daily participants.

DeepSeek has also emerged as a significant contender, quietly disrupting the AI landscape. Launched in January 2025, the app surpassed ChatGPT’s early growth trajectory with more downloads in its first six months than any other generative AI application. Its adoption is particularly strong across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, with total downloads reaching 127 million by mid-2025. DeepSeek’s strategy focuses on cost-effective AI and broad accessibility, appealing to markets where mobile-first adoption is highest. Analysts describe DeepSeek as completing the “Big Three” of the AI app ecosystem, alongside ChatGPT and Gemini, highlighting the growing diversity of competition in the sector.

OpenAI has responded to these market pressures by significantly increasing digital marketing spend and implementing an internal “code red” to focus on personalization and retention. Previously, the company relied largely on organic growth, but 2025 saw the launch of targeted campaigns aimed at students and heavy social media users, promoting ChatGPT Plus features through platforms like Instagram. Industry observers note that as the AI market transitions from novelty to utility, the apps that succeed will be those capable of integrating into daily routines, supporting writing, education, and productivity. Early signs suggest momentum may be shifting toward Google Gemini, though ChatGPT retains the largest base and a highly engaged audience.

The generative AI market now reflects a competitive three-way dynamic. ChatGPT maintains its lead in total installs and retention, Gemini leverages Android integration and viral tools like Nano Banana to expand its influence, and DeepSeek rapidly establishes a foothold in emerging markets. As adoption grows and users increasingly rely on AI for everyday tasks, the next phase of competition will hinge on functionality, reliability, and integration into daily digital habits. Sensor Tower’s findings signal that the AI landscape is moving from an initial land grab to a battle for long-term user engagement and daily relevance.
