The Government of Balochistan has entered into a formal agreement with National Bank of Pakistan to introduce a subsidized electric scooter program aimed at improving access to affordable transportation for students, working women, and members of the general public across the province. The initiative reflects a growing focus on sustainable mobility solutions and financial accessibility, particularly for groups that rely heavily on daily commuting for education and employment.
The memorandum of understanding was signed at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Quetta in the presence of Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti, Provincial Minister Mir Sadiq Umrani, senior officials from the provincial administration, and representatives of National Bank of Pakistan. Under the agreement, eligible participants will be able to obtain electric scooters through installment plans offered at subsidized rates, making ownership more attainable for a wider segment of the population. The collaboration brings together the provincial government’s policy support and the banking sector’s financial infrastructure to deliver a program designed to ease transportation pressures while promoting cleaner technology.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Minister Mir Sarfaraz Bugti emphasized that the initiative is intended to address everyday commuting challenges faced by students and working women, particularly in urban and semi urban areas where transport options can be limited or costly. He noted that electric scooters provide a safer and more affordable mode of transport compared to traditional alternatives, while also reducing dependence on fuel powered vehicles. By supporting electric mobility, the provincial government aims to encourage environmentally friendly practices that align with broader sustainability goals and help reduce the environmental footprint associated with daily travel.
The chief minister further highlighted that the program forms part of the government’s wider public welfare agenda, which prioritizes practical measures that directly impact citizens’ quality of life. He stated that access to reliable transportation plays a critical role in educational continuity, workforce participation, and economic inclusion. By facilitating easier mobility, the government seeks to create conditions that allow students to attend institutions more regularly and enable working women to commute with greater confidence and independence. He also pointed out that initiatives of this nature contribute to social inclusion by addressing mobility gaps that often disproportionately affect women and young people.
National Bank of Pakistan’s involvement in the scheme is expected to provide structured financing mechanisms, transparent installment plans, and institutional oversight to ensure smooth implementation. The partnership demonstrates how public sector banks can support government led technology adoption initiatives by extending financial products tailored to social development objectives. The electric scooter program also aligns with emerging trends in Pakistan’s transport landscape, where interest in electric vehicles is gradually increasing due to rising fuel costs and growing awareness of environmental concerns.
Chief Minister Bugti reiterated that the provincial government remains committed to launching projects that deliver tangible benefits and support long term economic and social progress throughout Balochistan. He said that continued collaboration with financial institutions and other stakeholders will be essential in expanding access to modern solutions that respond to citizens’ needs. The electric scooter scheme, he added, represents a step toward integrating technology driven mobility options into everyday life while reinforcing the province’s commitment to inclusive development and public welfare.
