The National Science Foundation chose the University of Texas at Austin, a world leader in artificial intelligence research, to lead a new $20 million national machine learning center this fall season

Another significant phase in the university’s contributions to AI and technology advancement is the NSF AI Institute for Foundations of Machine Learning. This will be located in a modern and permanent base for campus-wide artificial intelligence research: the Machine Learning Laboratory.

Tech entrepreneurs based in Austin and alumni of UT Austin, Zaib and Amir Husain, BBA’ 99 and B.S. ’98 provided $5 million to launch the Machine Learning Laboratory, which will provide a hub for UT-wide faculty, academics, and students to collaborate. Their gift will provide the students, faculty and pioneering work focused there with permanent support.

According to Amir Husain, “UT’s strengths in computer science, engineering, public policy, business and law can help drive AI applications. And for decades to come, Austin’s booming tech scene is destined to be a major driver for the local and national economy.”
