Dr Adil Haider Appointed Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer At Carle Illinois College Of Medicine

Pakistani American surgeon scientist Dr Adil Haider has been appointed as the Inaugural Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer at Carle Illinois College of Medicine, also known as CI MED, following an official press statement issued on Wednesday. CI MED is recognized as the world’s first engineering based medical school, combining medicine, technology, and data driven innovation under a single academic framework. The appointment places Dr Haider at the center of the institution’s strategy to integrate artificial intelligence across medical education, research, and clinical innovation in a structured and responsible manner.

The newly created CAIO role represents a significant milestone in Dr Haider’s international career, which spans professional leadership roles across Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. In his new position, Dr Haider will oversee the development and implementation of artificial intelligence initiatives that support clinical decision making, medical training, and research outcomes. His responsibilities include ensuring that AI adoption within CI MED remains grounded in real clinical needs while aligning with ethical standards and patient focused care. Dr Haider has emphasized that artificial intelligence holds the capacity to strengthen healthcare systems at scale when applied thoughtfully and with a clear understanding of clinical realities.

Dr Haider joins Carle Illinois after completing a 6.5 year tenure as Dean of the Aga Khan University Medical College in Pakistan, a period widely regarded as transformative for the institution. During his leadership, the medical college experienced a fourfold increase in research funding and achieved placement within the top 100 global medical institutions. The university also secured multiple international accreditations, further strengthening its academic standing. Throughout his time at Aga Khan University, Dr Haider earned recognition for his commitment to mentorship and accessibility, remaining a highly respected and approachable figure among students, faculty, and healthcare professionals.

Commenting on the appointment, CI MED Dean Mark Cohen stated that the decision reflects the institution’s commitment to making artificial intelligence a foundational element of modern medicine. He noted that Dr Haider’s experience and leadership would help ensure that innovation within the medical school remains ethical, patient centred, and aligned with long term healthcare goals. The appointment also signals CI MED’s intention to embed AI not as an isolated capability, but as an integrated component of education, research methodology, and clinical practice.

In addition to his role as CAIO, Dr Haider will serve as Medical Director for Research Informatics at Carle Foundation Hospital, where he will support data driven research and clinical innovation initiatives. He has also been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the University of Illinois Grainger College of Engineering, further strengthening collaboration between engineering and medical disciplines. These concurrent roles highlight the interdisciplinary approach that defines both CI MED’s academic model and Dr Haider’s professional philosophy.

Dr Haider’s academic and research credentials include authorship of more than 450 peer reviewed publications and successful acquisition of over 200 million dollars in research funding. In 2024, he founded Boston Health AI with a mission to improve healthcare delivery for one billion patients worldwide through responsible and scalable artificial intelligence solutions. His appointment at Carle Illinois College of Medicine reflects the growing convergence of medicine, engineering, and data science, while underscoring the increasing role of globally experienced leaders in shaping healthcare innovation.
