Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially rolled out its draft framework for the public trials of Fifth Generation (5G) Wireless Networks, the demonstration systems, and the other related services in Pakistan.
Various sources reveal that the framework consists of the development and test of future technologies especially for the 5G wireless networks in Pakistan. Moreover, in the framework, PTA states “Seen as a comprehensive wireless-access solution with the capacity to address the demands and requirements of mobile communication beyond IMT-2020, it is projected that this technology will operate in a highly heterogeneous environment and provide ubiquitous connectivity for a wide range of devices, new applications, and use cases.”
The Radio Communication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) coined the term IMT-2020 in 2012 in order to lay down the vision of “IMT for 2020 and beyond.” IMT stands for International Mobile Telecommunications.
With regards to Pakistan, PTA has underlined that the scope of IMT-2020 is wider than the prior generations of mobile telecommunication systems. They have also been collaborating with the entire range of 5G stakeholders that are associated with spectrum management and spectrum identification aspects. The telecom regulator also terms the IMT-2020 as the foundation for all the activities pertaining to the achievement of goals in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The PTA draft framework for 5G also provides the use of radio spectrum on trial basis for non-commercial purposes to enable the execution of trials for the innovative use of radio frequency spectrum and equipment/apparatus and academic purposes like radio concepts, scientific research, and new systems demonstrations. Along with a framework for temporary Test and Development licenses only that will detail the criteria for the provision of conditions, authorization, duration, and other terms and conditions
