Pakistan’s higher education sector continues to gain visibility across Asia, with 35 universities securing positions in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. The rankings include around 180 subject entries, reflecting a mix of strengths in technical, scientific, and agricultural disciplines alongside ongoing challenges in global recognition. Institutions based in Islamabad and Lahore remain dominant, while universities from other regions are gradually building their presence on the international stage.
The QS World University Rankings are published annually to assess universities based on academic reputation, employer perception, research output, teaching quality, and international diversity. The 2026 rankings rely on nine key indicators, with academic reputation carrying the highest weight of 30 percent. Research impact, measured through citations per faculty, contributes 20 percent, while employer reputation accounts for 15 percent. Faculty to student ratio represents 10 percent, and global diversity is reflected through international faculty and student ratios, each contributing 5 percent. The remaining weight is distributed across international research networks, employment outcomes, and sustainability, offering a comprehensive view of institutional performance.
Among Pakistani institutions, National University of Sciences and Technology Islamabad led the national rankings, securing the third position locally and 68th in Asia with an overall score of 76. The university demonstrated strong performance in academic reputation and research productivity, achieving 74.5 citations per paper and 54 papers per faculty. It ranked within the 201 to 250 band globally for Engineering and Technology and between 201 and 300 for Computer Science, reinforcing its position as a leading technical institution. Quaid e Azam University Islamabad followed as the second highest ranked public university, holding the eighth national position and 89th in Asia with a score of 69.9. It stood out in research output, recording 94.6 papers per faculty and 87.9 citations per paper, with subject rankings in Natural Sciences and Physics placing between 201 and 400 globally.
In the private sector, Lahore University of Management Sciences emerged as the top performer, ranking 15th nationally and 129th in Asia. Its Business and Management Studies programs were placed within the 101 to 150 global band, making it Pakistan’s strongest institution in business education. Institute of Business Administration Karachi followed with rankings in business and economics between 151 and 250, while Aga Khan University maintained its standing in medicine and life sciences within the 201 to 250 range. Emerging institutions such as Habib University also appeared in subject rankings, particularly in social sciences, though mostly within the 400 plus band. Public universities including University of the Punjab, University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, COMSATS University Islamabad, and University of Agriculture Faisalabad recorded placements across multiple disciplines, with agriculture and engineering remaining key strengths.
The broader data reflects a consistent gap between research productivity and global reputation. Universities such as University of Agriculture Faisalabad and PIEAS Islamabad demonstrated strong research metrics but comparatively lower overall scores, indicating limited international recognition. On the other hand, institutions like LUMS and IBA benefited from higher reputational scores despite producing fewer research publications. Regionally, most high ranking universities are concentrated in Islamabad and Lahore, while institutions in cities such as Peshawar, Multan, and Bahawalpur are gradually improving their global standing. Experts suggest that increased investment in research infrastructure, faculty development, and international collaborations could help address these disparities and strengthen Pakistan’s position in global higher education rankings.
