The government of Sindh has decided to make it compulsory for motorcycle owners to install a tracking device in their motorbikes. The provincial government will also be amending Motor Vehicle Ordinance that will make it mandatory for motorcyclists to install the device. According to data, around 600,000 new motorcycles are being purchased in the province per annum.
The Minister of Provincial Transport has sent the summary to the Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday, according to the local news. Furthermore, under the amendment the motorcycle companies will also be bound to install trackers in motorcycles. The Sindh Excise and Taxation Department will only be registering those motorcycles that have tracking devices installed in them.
The proposal was floated in 2017 as an attempt to curb street crimes in the region. At that time the now former Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal chaired the meeting that was attended by tracking companies, motorcycle manufacturers, Sindh police, excise department, Rangers and Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) who had taken the decision.
