Wiki Loves Earth is an annual international photography competition is organized by the Wikipedia community members alongside Wikimedia affiliates worldwide. The participants are to submit in the pictures they taken of nature or their heritage in their respective countries. In the recent edition of the competition, they have shortlisted the ten best Pakistan photographs in the competition.
With an aim to highlight the conservation areas of the participating countries, it asks the participants to put these pictures under a free license which can be re-used by multiple sources so that the online community can see these pictures worldwide. Wiki Loves Earth shortlisted the ten photographs out of a registered count of 8,500 entries. In the entirety of the competition, which held its inaugural event in May 2013, Pakistan boasts the accolade of having the highest number of participants in the competition. With over 7,600 individuals from 32 other countries and amassing a pool of 90,000 photos overall, Pakistani participants consisted of an impressive 1,250.
In an effort to promote these protected areas across the world, Pakistan have also been victorious in this competition in 2015 when the picture of Skardu’s Shangrila Resort took place the first position in the competition.
