Tetra Pak, a global leader in food processing and packaging solutions, has unveiled its inaugural Sustainability Report for Pakistan, aligning it with the company’s FY23 Global Sustainability Report. The report highlights Tetra Pak’s commitment to environmental, social, and economic sustainability in the region, with a focus on mitigating the country’s pressing challenges in these areas.

The launch event, held in Islamabad, was a significant occasion that saw the participation of government officials, diplomats, and key policymakers. Mr. Hammad Shameemi, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental Coordination, graced the event as the Chief Guest. The report underscores the crucial role that sustainability plays in Pakistan’s development, particularly in addressing environmental concerns, resource scarcity, and improving waste management and recycling systems.

Pakistan is grappling with complex challenges, including unclear environmental policies, inadequate waste management infrastructure, and limited recycling capacity. Despite these hurdles, Tetra Pak has maintained its commitment to sustainability by reducing its carbon footprint and supporting decarbonization at its production plant in Lahore. The company has also intensified its recycling initiatives and focused on raising environmental awareness in the local community.

In addition to its environmental efforts, Tetra Pak introduced several innovative processing solutions aimed at improving the sustainability and operational efficiency of its customers. The company’s environmental approach also extends beyond its operations. Tetra Pak has partnered with Green Earth Recycling to recycle 35,000 tons of used beverage cartons by 2025, contributing significantly to waste reduction in the country. The partnership with WWF further amplifies these efforts by educating young students on recycling, instilling the importance of environmental consciousness from an early age.

One of the key highlights of Tetra Pak’s sustainability initiatives is its investment in International Renewable Energy Certificates (iRECs), which has led to an impressive 80% reduction in carbon emissions at its Lahore plant. Moreover, the company’s OneStep UHT processing technology has enabled dairy manufacturers in Pakistan to reduce water consumption by 30% and carbon emissions by 25%, making their operations more sustainable.

Awais Bin Nasim, Managing Director of Tetra Pak Pakistan, emphasized the company’s dedication to sustainability during the event, stating,

“This report reflects our unwavering commitment to sustainability despite the challenges unique to Pakistan. It showcases how our local initiatives, collaborative efforts, and innovative solutions are creating meaningful change for communities and the environment. We are proud to take this step towards greater transparency and accountability.”

Mr. Hammad Shameemi acknowledged the importance of Tetra Pak’s efforts, saying,

“This report highlights the critical role of the private sector in addressing Pakistan’s environmental challenges. As the country stands at the forefront of the global climate crisis, we expect organizations like Tetra Pak to lead the way with innovative solutions such as advancing recycling systems, optimizing resource efficiency, and engaging communities through environmental education. Their efforts set a benchmark for sustainability and demonstrate how the private sector can support the government in building a more resilient and sustainable Pakistan.”

Tetra Pak’s inaugural Sustainability Report for Pakistan symbolizes its ongoing commitment to creating a positive impact in the regions where it operates. Through its collaboration with local stakeholders, government bodies, and organizations, the company continues to push for a more sustainable future while contributing meaningfully to Pakistan’s development goals. The company’s efforts not only help mitigate environmental challenges but also promote social and economic sustainability in the country.
