The telecom industry has sounded the alarm over the proposed downsizing of the Ministry of IT and Telecom (MoITT), expressing deep concerns about the potential negative impacts on the sector.
In a letter to the Minister of State for IT and Telecom, the Telecom Operators Association highlighted the ministry’s critical role in formulating policies for the telecom sector, attracting billions in investment, and contributing significantly to the national exchequer.
The association argued that the MoITT’s specialized knowledge and expertise are essential for the sector’s growth and development. Its dissolution, they warned, could lead to policy inconsistencies, deter investment, and hinder Pakistan’s digital transformation goals.
The telecom industry emphasized the importance of a dedicated ministry for maintaining international commitments, fostering innovation, and ensuring a stable regulatory environment. They cautioned that merging the MoITT with another ministry could dilute its focus and impact the sector’s performance.
The association urged the government to reconsider the proposed downsizing, emphasizing the need for a strong and independent IT and telecom ministry to drive the country’s digital economy forward.
