Snapchat has rolled out an updated version of its Family Center, providing parents and caregivers with more detailed insights into how their teenage children use the platform and who they interact with. The enhanced features allow parents to see the average amount of time teens spend on Snapchat daily over the past week, along with a breakdown showing usage across key platform functions such as chatting, camera activity, Snap Map exploration, and consumption of Stories and Spotlight content. These metrics aim to help caregivers understand online habits more comprehensively and initiate informed discussions about digital well-being and healthy screen time.

In addition to time tracking, the Family Center update introduces improved trust signals to give parents more context on new social connections. When a teen adds a new friend, parents can now view indicators such as whether the contact is saved in the teen’s device, whether they share mutual friends, and if they belong to the same school or community groups. These insights allow caregivers to assess how well a teen might know someone in real life, addressing previous limitations where parents could only see a simple friend list without further context. Despite these visibility enhancements, Snapchat has maintained that private messages remain inaccessible, ensuring teen communications remain confidential.

According to Snapchat, the purpose of Family Center is to reflect real-world dynamics by giving visibility into usage patterns without monitoring private conversations. Parents can adjust content restrictions, manage access to features such as the My AI chatbot and the AI-powered search engine Perplexity, share location within the family, and report accounts of concern on behalf of their teens. The update encourages open dialogue and mutual understanding between parents and teens rather than functioning as a tool for surveillance.

The rollout comes amid growing discussions globally about digital well-being, screen time, and online safety, with policymakers, educators, and families seeking balanced approaches to social media oversight. In South Asia and other regions, concerns about adolescent online activity have prompted debates over regulatory approaches, including advocacy for social media bans. Snapchat’s enhanced Family Center presents an alternative approach, offering parental guidance tools while respecting teen privacy. The company’s global expansion of these features signals an effort to equip families with practical mechanisms to engage with social media usage safely and responsibly while encouraging healthy digital habits.
