Pakistan is witnessing a noticeable shift towards electric mobility as rising fuel prices push commuters to seek more affordable alternatives, with Chinese electric scooters emerging as a popular choice in urban areas. The trend reflects growing pressure on household budgets due to sustained increases in petrol and diesel prices, prompting consumers to explore cost effective and low maintenance transport options.
Electric scooters and small bikes are gaining traction particularly in major cities, where daily commuting costs have risen sharply. Industry observers note that these vehicles offer a practical solution for short distance travel, combining lower operational costs with ease of use. Women and first time riders are also becoming a key segment of users, as scooters provide a simpler and more accessible mode of transport compared to traditional motorcycles. The growth in demand is reflected in sales figures, which have increased significantly over the past few years. Electric two wheeler sales rose from around 2,000 units in 2022 to approximately 6,000 units in 2023, followed by a sharp jump to nearly 33,000 units in 2024. The momentum has continued into 2025, with around 57,800 units sold within the first seven months alone, indicating strong market expansion.
Chinese manufacturers are playing a central role in this shift, with brands such as Yadea, Luyuan, Revoo, Crown Electric, and Eveon expanding their presence in Pakistan through partnerships with local distributors. These scooters typically feature lithium ion or graphene batteries and offer a driving range of 80 to 120 kilometres, making them suitable for daily urban commuting needs. Despite growing adoption, certain challenges remain, particularly around pricing and infrastructure. Electric scooters are significantly more expensive in Pakistan compared to international markets due to taxes and import duties, with prices reaching around Rs235,000. Experts suggest that reducing these costs and improving charging infrastructure could further accelerate adoption and make electric mobility more accessible to a wider population.
As fuel prices remain volatile, the shift towards electric scooters is increasingly being viewed as both an economic and environmental necessity. With continued policy support and industry investment, the electric two wheeler segment is expected to expand further, playing a key role in reshaping Pakistan’s urban mobility landscape in the coming years.
