Punjab has taken a significant step towards bridging the digital divide in education with the launch of a satellite internet initiative for schools. The pilot project, inaugurated by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday, aims to provide internet access to thousands of schools across the province.
The initiative was formally launched at DPS Model Town in the presence of a delegation from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) led by Sheikh Ahmed Dalmouk Al Maktoum. During the ceremony, Chief Minister Nawaz interacted with students at the DPS Digital Lab, highlighting the government’s commitment to digital integration for enhanced educational experiences.
A key aspect of the project is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the parties involved. This agreement paves the way for equipping schools with satellite internet access, particularly targeting underserved remote areas. The collaboration underscores the shared vision of leveraging technology for development.
The UAE delegation, recognizing the importance of satellite internet in improving digital access, expressed their enthusiasm for the project. Sheikh Ahmed Dalmouk Al Maktoum specifically commended the initiative’s potential to nurture young talent and drive technological innovation.
This partnership, which brings together OneWeb, ADM Holding, and the Punjab government, represents a collective effort to realize the digital aspirations of the region. Chief Minister Nawaz reiterated the government’s commitment to a “digitally empowered Punjab,” confirming plans to provide both laptops and satellite internet access to students. Senator Pervez Rasheed and Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb were also present at the launch ceremony.
This initiative signifies a promising step towards ensuring equitable access to technology for students across Punjab, potentially revolutionizing educational opportunities within the province.
