The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has disclosed processing a staggering 1.4 million URLs and 308 mobile apps for blocking due to involvement in unlawful activities, as part of ongoing efforts to regulate digital content.
According to the PTA, over the past year, it targeted various types of URLs for blocking, with 22,496 URLs deemed detrimental to Pakistan’s security and defense. Additionally, 27,901 URLs were flagged for content related to decency and morality, while 11,332 URLs were targeted for their perceived impact on Islam’s glory.
Other categories addressed by the PTA include URLs associated with defamation and impersonation (5,946 URLs), hate speech and sectarianism (4,778 URLs), contempt of court (137 URLs), and proxy sites (32 URLs).
The PTA maintains that its actions align with the Electronic Crimes Act, empowering the authority to monitor digital content and swiftly respond to complaints regarding materials deemed harmful to the state or religious sentiments.
