Gwadar’s traditional fishing industry is set for a technological upgrade as Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) has announced plans to establish a state-of-the-art Marine Innovation Lab at its Precision System Training Centre (PSTC). According to official documents, the new facility will focus on the manufacturing of CNC precision and composite boats as well as sustainable fiberglass vessels using computer numerical control (CNC) technology. By integrating advanced manufacturing processes with the skills of local craftsmen, the initiative aims to give a substantial boost to Gwadar’s fishing sector and its wider maritime economy.
The Marine Innovation Lab is part of PSTC’s larger mission to prepare a skilled workforce for industries emerging in Gwadar under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The centre was established through a memorandum of understanding between PCSIR and the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) to create training opportunities aligned with the demands of new industrial activity in the port city. Currently, 68 students from underdeveloped areas of Balochistan are enrolled at the training facility, benefiting from a combination of theoretical and hands-on instruction tailored to the needs of high-tech manufacturing and maintenance sectors.
PSTC offers both long- and short-term programs designed to prepare youth for specialised technical roles. These include a three-year Diploma of Associate Engineering in Precision Mechanics and Instrument Technology, along with six-month courses in machinist training, graphic design and general electrician skills. So far, 50 students have graduated from the short courses and entered the local job market, while 18 are pursuing the three-year diploma. Hostel accommodation with a capacity for up to 80 students has also been provided to encourage participation from distant parts of Balochistan, making it easier for young people to access training opportunities in Gwadar.
A senior official at the centre stated that the Marine Innovation Lab will enhance the durability and safety of fishing vessels and make them more competitive in both local and regional markets. By introducing CNC technology into boat manufacturing, the project is expected to support the livelihoods of fishing communities and add value to the city’s marine economy. The official also noted that equipping youth with employable skills is central to bridging the regional skill gap and aligning local talent with the industrial demands emerging under CPEC. Through this initiative, PSTC and PCSIR are seeking to create a pipeline of skilled workers ready to contribute to Gwadar’s evolving economic landscape.
