The government of Pakistan is nearing the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB), marking an end to a leadership vacuum that has persisted since August 2022. After a comprehensive selection process, a panel of three candidates has been submitted to the federal government for final approval, with the decision expected to restore direction to the board, which plays a key role in promoting the country’s IT exports.
According to an official document from the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MoITT), the recruitment process for the post was re-advertised on April 7, 2024. The re-opening of applications came after previous efforts failed to produce a successful candidate. A total of 234 applications were received, out of which 16 candidates were initially shortlisted. After further rounds of scrutiny and interviews, six candidates were chosen for consideration by the PSEB Board of Directors. During its 59th meeting on June 3, 2024, the board finalized three top candidates for the role, whose names have now been forwarded to the federal government for final selection.
The final decision is subject to the completion of due diligence and clearance processes. Once approved, the new CEO will assume the position for a three-year term, which is expected to bring long-awaited stability to the organization. The leadership gap began when the former Managing Director’s term concluded in August 2022. Following this, the position was re-designated as CEO, reflecting an organizational shift aimed at streamlining leadership. However, delays in filling the role have left the PSEB without a permanent head, limiting its capacity to execute its mandate effectively.
The PSEB, an arm of the Ministry of IT and Telecommunications, is a crucial agency tasked with promoting Pakistan’s software exports and supporting the development of the country’s IT sector. With the industry rapidly expanding and contributing significantly to the national economy, the appointment of a capable and visionary CEO is seen as essential for steering the organization’s future. Industry stakeholders hope that with a new leader at the helm, the PSEB will be able to address key challenges, including market access, talent development, and infrastructure support for IT companies.
As the final steps toward the CEO’s appointment unfold, there is widespread anticipation that the new leadership will revitalize the board’s efforts and accelerate the growth of Pakistan’s software export industry. The government’s focus on selecting the right candidate underscores the critical role PSEB plays in positioning Pakistan as a competitive player in the global IT landscape.
