Pakistan’s federal government is placing a significant emphasis on information technology and telecommunication in the upcoming national budget, proposing a Rs. 27.43 billion development allocation for the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT). This signifies a major investment aimed at bolstering the country’s IT sector.

The breakdown of the proposed budget reveals several key areas the government intends to focus on. A substantial sum of Rs. 6.28 billion will be directed towards launching 15 new IT projects. This injection of funds has the potential to foster innovation and growth within the sector. Additionally, Rs. 21.15 billion has been earmarked to ensure the continued development of 15 existing IT projects.

The budget proposal also prioritizes digital transformation.  Rs. 55 million will be dedicated to digitization and infrastructure projects, which are likely aimed at modernizing government operations and services. Furthermore, a budget of Rs. 300 million is proposed for establishing smart office environments within various ministries and departments. This initiative could potentially improve efficiency and collaboration within the government.

Promoting the digital economy is another key focus area, with Rs. 3.5 billion being channeled towards this objective. These funds could be used to support initiatives like e-commerce development and digital skills training, propelling Pakistan towards a more digital future.

The budget proposal doesn’t stop there. Significant allocations have also been made for infrastructure development. The government has designated Rs. 9.92 billion for the advancement of the Technology Park in Islamabad. This investment has the potential to create a hub for technology companies and innovation within the capital city. Additionally, Rs. 6.78 billion is proposed for the establishment of an IT park in Karachi. This move aims to expand the country’s IT ecosystem beyond Islamabad and create a more geographically balanced technological landscape.

Finally, the government has proposed Rs. 1 billion each for cybersecurity initiatives within the “Digital Pakistan” project and fostering innovation within the IT industry. These investments aim to create a secure and dynamic environment for the country’s technological development. The proposed budget demonstrates the government’s commitment to propelling Pakistan’s IT sector forward and establishing a strong foundation for a digital future.
